Russian Painter, ca.1680-1742,Russian painter. The son of a Moscow priest who was close to the imperial court, Nikitin probably studied at the workshop of the Armoury Palace in Moscow and subsequently worked chiefly in St Petersburg. His early portraits were of Peter the Great and members of Peter family, for example the portraits of Peter daughters Elizabeth (St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.) and Anne (Moscow, Tret yakov Gal.) and of his sister Natal ya Alekseyevna (St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.). One of the few signed and dated works is a portrait of Praskov ya Ioannovna, Daughter of Tsar Ivan V (1714; St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.). Nikitin style was formed at the time of Peter the Great reforms of the administrative and education system in Russia, and he ranks as a pioneer of a new style in Russian painting. Paul Serusier
French Painter, 1863-1927 was a French painter who was a pioneer of abstract art and an inspiration for the avant-garde Nabi movement. He studied at the Academie Julian and was a monitor there in the mid 1880s. In the summer of 1888 he travelled to Pont-Aven and joined the small group of artists centered there around Paul Gauguin. While at the Pont-Aven artist's colony he painted a picture that became known as The Talisman, under the close supervision of Gauguin. The picture was an extreme exercise in Cloisonnism that approximated to pure abstraction. He was a Post-Impressionist painter, a part of the group of painters called Les Nabis. Serusier along with Paul Gauguin named the group. Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis became the best known of the group, but at the time they were somewhat peripheral to the core group.

Danish Neoclassical Painter, 1783-1853 Danish painter and teacher. He has been called 'the father of Danish painting' because of the influence he exerted on Danish painters in the second quarter of the 19th century. With Christen K?bke he was the leading painter of the Danish 'Golden Age' (c. 1800-1850).
